Nice looking, hard reading, January 21, 2011

I haven’t owned a digital watch in over 20 years, but I bought this one as an inexpensive ‘weekend’ watch. I like the simple lines — it’s bold and understated at the same time, if that makes sense. I think it looks better in person than in the photos, far nicer than a typical Casio or Timex.

Unfortunately what doesn’t look better in person is the display. The ‘reverse’ LCD is readable, but there just isn’t as much contrast as the photos seem to show. At certain angles it becomes easier to read but it never looks like in the photos. In dim conditions when most of my other watches are still readable, this one is almost impossible to read. Luckily the backlight works great and the numbers take on a cool blue glow against the black background. Of course you have to press the button though, so telling the time becomes a two-handed operation.

This new offering from Armitron is priced on the high side in its line of resin banded watches but is worth the extra few dollars. Embodying the esthetic quality of **shigiri**, it is classed as a sport watch but could be worn for business. It is reminiscent of a 00 Rado with its minimalist, square design and black face. The accuracy also is the equal of a 00 timepiece. It literally never needs resetting once set accurately.

The digital hour/minute display is large, with somewhat smaller digits displaying seconds and date. This leaves little room for the day of the week display, which requires better than 20/20 eyes to make out. However, the location of this display advances with each day so it is not necessary to read the letters.

The real drawback is that the Reverse LCD is not high visibility and has a limited visibility angle, fading markedly with each degree of deflection. The slightly curved window is prone to reflections, also. At a cost…

Refreshing change of digital monotomy, December 16, 2010

When I received my watch 10 days earlier than projected I was pleasantly suprised.

I ran through the quick instruction script and found out that this watch was more

than expected. To my delight, it has features like a second time zone, stop watch,

count down timer, and dual alarm made this device perfect for my line of work as

well as the recreational running that I enjoy every other day. For the money it

is the best watch I have owned yet!
